What is reiki?
Although there are no conclusive studies on Reiki’s efficacy to date, this modality is often used in professional health facilities ranging from hospitals, nursing homes, and rehab centers to animal shelters and hospice facilities. In fact, Wentworth-Douglass hospital in nearby Dover, NH was one of the first medical facilities to add a Reiki program, and it is still being offered by volunteers as part of their integrative wellness program. Reiki complements traditional and allopathic modalities by working with the subtle energetic body, and by physically activating the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” function). It is wonderful for relieving stress, restoring balance to our lives, helping us gain introspection, and tapping into our body’s own healing power.
We begin each session with an in-depth discussion of your personal wellness history, integrating the relationship between the physical and emotional, and develop a framework and intention(s) for your session. As no two people's healing journeys will ever be the same, this process is very intuitive and can change from session to session.
Gentle and relaxing, Reiki is a well-known form of energy work that channels Universal healing energy for a client’s highest healing good. The system originated in Japan in the 1800s and has been taught to people all over the world for nearly 100 years. To learn more about Reiki’s origins, you can read this article from the International Association of Reiki Professionals.
During a session, a client will lie down or sit on a chair, remaining fully clothed. The Reiki practitioner gently lays their hands on (or just above) various points of the body to help channel this energy, clearing any energetic blockages and re-establishing a grounded, balanced energy for the recipient to carry forward.
Clients who receive Reiki commonly report feelings of peace and relaxation, physical relief, or enhanced intuitive and spiritual connection. Since it only works for your highest healing good, Reiki can do no harm and is entirely safe for people of all ages, backgrounds, and physical abilities.
